Catholics all over the world are welcoming the new Pope, the Bishop of Rome and the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, the successor of Saint Peter, the Apostle. HABEMUS PAPAM! ABBIAMO PAPA! THERE IS A NEW POPE! Meet Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis I.
We all know the meaning of white smoke pouring out from the Sistine Chapel chimney in St. Peter’s Square, this is the signal that a new pope will appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
After a very short Papal Conclave which is the procedure for choosing the pope and is the oldest ongoing method for choosing the leader of an institution the decision has been taken! Normally conclaves often need more than one round of balloting to produce a pope and cardinals can even vote for themselves which may explain that.
But after two days of conclave meetings with a total of five ballots cast Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio Of Buenos Aires appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica at Wednesday more than an hour after white smoke was released from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 2:05 EDT; can you imagine the joy but at the same time the expectation of all the presents!! All the faithful Catholics who have been praying for weeks since Pope Benedict XVI resigned. But we also have to remember they couldn’t take too much time making the decision since Holy Week is upon us and there can not be Holy Week without the ultimate Catholics Church Leader.
Plus there is always that little issue about not giving the impression that there is any discrepancies between the heads of the Church. You know with all the unfortunate pedophilia cases
Any way who is Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio ? Francis I, whose papacy is effective immediately, will be formally installed in the coming days. He chose the name because of St. Francis de Sales.
Jorge Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife.
After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvadorin Buenos Aires.
He presented his work with leadership skills which made the Society of Jesus promote Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel where he had studied.
He was elevated to Cardenal in 2001 by Pope Joan Paul the II.And became known for personal humility, doctrinal conservatism and a commitment to social justice. A simple lifestyle contributed to his reputation for humility. He lived in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop’s residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation, and he reportedly cooked his own meals!
Bergoglio has invited his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia and he is He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a
“real and dire anthropological throwback”
