Meet Mimi O’Donnell, Mimi O’Donnell is the long-time girlfriend of 46 year old Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead of drug overdose at his NYC apartment. Mimi O’Donnell screamed and inconsolable when she heard about it.
Mimi O’Donnell, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is 45 year old. She graduated from Philadelphia College (Philadelphia University) of Textiles and Sciences with major in fashion. There was an interview of her in 2001. You will find she has quite a lot of work experience before she met Hoffman and enjoyed her work very much.
“I spent my freshman year at school in Lancaster, PA, doing secondary ed,” “It was something I enjoyed for a time, but then I spent time student-teaching, and I realized I didn’t want to do that. So I took a year off and worked in a dentist’s office as a hygiene assistant. But that wasn’t really what I wanted to do either, so I started taking classes at Philadelphia Textile.”
Then she worked as the assistant designer in Arden Theatre Co. and Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia
“It sort of clarified that this was what I wanted to do, instead of doing fashion,”
In 1993 she worked as the first hand in the costume shop in Massachusetts there she found what she truely loves to do and worked on several productions ever since.
“That was the first time I was completely surrounded by it, immersed in the whole costume thing,” ‘This is what I want to do and I want to move to New York.’ It was a crazy, crazy place to work, because you do 10 shows throughout the summer; it’s practically like opening a show every week.”
Then she had the opportunity to do the costumes for In Arabia We’d All Be Kings. This movie was directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in 1999 when Mimi and Hoffman’s relationship began, then they worked together on another movie called Jesus Hopped the A Train in 2000.
Although they never marry, they had 1 son Cooper Alexander, born in 2003 and 2 daughters, Tallulah born in 2006 and Willa born in 2008.
Even Philip Seymour Hoffman was clean for 23 years and in 2006 he admitted that he was nearly died from substance abuse.
“It was all that (drug as alcohol), yeah. I was anything I could get my hands on…I liked it all,” – Philip Seymour Hoffman said in 2006
Mimi O’Donnell was always confident about his husband’s recovery,
“He had his problems, but she thought he was on the road to recovery following his recent rehab stint.” – a source
It’s sad that he didn’t recover this time…
Hoffman’s family published a statement on Sunday,
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support.”
The statement added, “This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving.”
Mimi had tough days after Hoffman’s dead,
“Mimi already had a tough few days, after the recent hoax that claimed Philip had died.” “She will have to stay strong for the sake of their kids.”
Rest in Peace Philip!
